Leather, the return of a classic to interior design

Although it never completely disappeared, leather has returned stronger and in a sustainable way. This versatile and durable material has reinvented itself through responsible finishes and versions that respond to the demand for more circular and conscious projects.

Leather has become a classic in interior design, synonymous with comfort and elegance. Below, we see several examples that show how leather is integrated into contemporary interior architecture.

Sustainable leathers

A prime example is Pelle, from Finsa’s Fabric range, a novel coating that retains the aesthetic appeal of leather and is made with recycled materials from other sectors, thus contributing to the circularity of the product.

Another innovative alternative is vegan leather made from cactus by the Mexican company Desserto. An option that embodies beauty, durability and respect for the environment. From sustainable materials like these, original pieces like the following emerge.

Elegant leather armchairs

The renewal of leather in upholstery brings a new dimension to classic and contemporary designs. The Wings armchair by Roberto Cavalli Home Interiors, a limited edition armchair upholstered in white vegan leather and presented at the Salone del Mobile 2025, shows how luxury and craftsmanship coexist with alternative materials. The piece evokes the glamour of Las Vegas, with hand-sewn red, blue, and gold gemstone inlays.

Also present at the Salone, models like the Nevada series have a design that combines smooth curves and leather armrests. Grand Confort (Cassina), an iconic armchair by Le Corbusier, is updated with new colour ranges and cushions that combine mohair velvet with leather, in contrast with shiny metal structures.

Bold leather chairs

High-end interior design firms are incorporating leather into sculptural designs. FENDI Casa, for example, merges contrasting materials in pieces that balance functionality and elegance. This is the case of the FF Twist chair, by Stefano Gallizioli, which uses materials such as leather, wood and metal in a contemporary interpretation of the classic chair presented at Milan Design Week 2025.

Leather lamps

Leather also makes its way into lighting with solutions that highlight the craftsmanship of the material. The Bridge X Zafferano lampshade is a full cover of natural leather, dyed and hand-stitched at the edges, uniting traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Will you go back to giving your all to your projects? At least, in the application of this materiality.
