Four interiors where the flooring creates the atmosphere

The floor seemed destined to serve as a backdrop, never taking centre stage —a necessary surface, yes, but almost silent, upon which the truly visible interior design decisions were made. Today, that hierarchy has been reversed, and flooring now dictates pathways, connects rooms, modulates the perception of space, and can become the material thread that ties together an entire project. We’ll show you this through four different projects, from living rooms to more demanding spaces like hospitality venues or offices.

This trendy sense of connection within the home is evident in Casa Passivhaus M&C, designed by Cambium Estudio, where Finfloor Evolve Natural Wexford Oak serves as a continuous base for a home that embraces a minimalist approach to materials and a serene atmosphere. “It’s a common foundation that connects the different rooms and adds warmth without competing with the other elements”, explains María Sánchez. This was especially important in the living area, where the open-plan kitchen flows seamlessly into the living and dining rooms, creating a single, unified space with the same flooring. This continuity even extends to the staircase, which features the same finish on the treads. This isn’t merely an aesthetic choice: the Evolve collections with Durable PRO technology allow for profile-free installations of up to 144 m², minimising visual interruptions between spaces.

At AQ Urban Fira Edificio Lisboa, AQ approaches flooring from an almost corporeal perspective. “It’s the surface with which the body maintains the most intense contact”, notes Tomàs López, designer at the eponymous studio. Hence the choice of designs with character— Natural Wexford Oak, Dark Arles Oak, and Fionia Pine —which integrate seamlessly into the spaces thanks to their organic colour palette and are capable of creating a visually relaxed atmosphere.

The scale of a hotel introduces another requirement: that this sensory experience must withstand intensive use. At the Gran Hotel Taoro, Dishot chose the Finfloor Evolve range with Durable PRO technology to reproduce the warmth of fine woods with performance tailored to the fit-out sector. “The laminate guaranteed us superior realism in reproducing the grain, the synchronised textures, and the inherent warmth of natural wood”, says Ana González-Anleo, interior designer. Here, Durable PRO adds AC6 abrasion resistance and water protection at joints for up to 100 hours, thanks to a dimensionally stable board, a watertight click system, and a Unicoat treatment.

In offices, the flooring can also act as a starting point rather than a finishing touch. At Maderas Portu, the Finfloor XL Honey Eyre Oak was used. It set the direction for the rest of the decisions. “Starting with the floor, we worked on the rest of the materials, colours and finishes, seeking that everything made sense and was well integrated”, explains Oier Pejenaute.

Four different contexts thus share the same idea: that when the flooring is decided from the beginning, it ceases to be a finish and becomes interior architecture.
