CJ House, Coimbra: a choreography of wood and light

In CJ House (Coimbra, 2024), Artspazios reorganises a home marked by disparate interventions and returns it to a single narrative. The starting point was as clear as it was demanding: to create an emotionally balanced space, with its own identity, without sacrificing comfort, functionality and durability. The answer is articulated through a choreography of wood, light, and custom-made pieces that connect rooms and levels with an almost tactile calm.

The project is read in continuity, where panelling and enveloping grain ceilings create warm spaces in the dining room and living room; in the bedroom, a rhythm of slats interacts with brass and neutral upholstery. Nothing is free. The studio insists that aesthetics only matter when they enhance the experience of the person living there, ensuring that each formal gesture is born from an intention of use, easy maintenance, or comfort.

Total look in wood in the rooms and levels

The key to the renovation is the total look in wood that connects rooms and levels. To achieve this, the team uses a combination of surfaces that work as a single language: FibraPan® Decor Richmond Plum Mesura on the large panelling surfaces and doors – due to its grain regularity and dimensional stability -, Lino Cancún Textil on the fronts and shelves where a softer tactile layer was desired, and lacquered FibraPan® for custom-made pieces and carpentry details that require perfect finishes. Overall, the work demonstrates how the choice of medium and finish, beyond the decorative, can guide the inner narrative.

There are particularly striking scenes: the circulation areas and vertical access points are finished with the same finishes, so that they “infect” adjacent spaces—such as the dining room—with great visual impact and without sacrificing durability to daily use. Wood, far from being a mere covering, acts as a narrative structure, uniting the domestic with the architectural.

High sensory value and performance materiality

The choice of materials also considered criteria that the study considers essential: sustainability, innovation and technical feasibility. Durability and the availability of recognised certifications were crucial, as was the ability to seamlessly align design and execution. The studio was looking for surfaces with texture and tone, capable of combining with the rest of the solutions. The combination allowed us to work with a neutral but rich colour palette, which natural light and integrated lighting activate throughout the day.

CJ House confirms a direction of travel that Artspazios identifies for contemporary interior design: surfaces with high sensorial value and performance, capable of unifying and modulating space with sobriety. Thus, it demonstrates that when a relationship between the studio, industry, and supply chain works, it allows the project’s intention to reach the last corner of the plinth intact. Here, the wood is not just an image, it is a narrative structure. And when the light falls on these continuous planes, the house seems to speak in a low voice… and very clearly.
