3 contemporary home renovation projects

In the transformation of a house built decades ago into a more modern and contemporary one, two ideas seem to be transversal to many projects: letting in light and opening up spaces. That is at least what the three rehabilitation projects we explore in this article have in common, in addition to a search for peace and warmth -those qualities that turn a space into a home- through strategies such as the use of materials like wood. The result is three homes with their own personality, perfectly renovated, habitable and that meet the most urgent requirement of any current rehabilitation project, sustainability.

Apartment renovation in Bilbao | Karola Studio

To transform a modest dwelling into a home full of functionality and style, Karola Estudio focused on the design of custom-made furniture. “We love working with wood and neutral tones, and that is reflected in every corner of this home”, they explain. Each piece was designed to perfectly suit the needs of the home.

Another decision that immediately transformed the space was to open up the living room with a sliding wooden door, a simple modification that allowed natural light to flood this area, “giving the home a feeling of spaciousness and brightness that did not exist before”.

House for 2 architects | toledano + architects

An apartment located in a 19th-century building in the heart of Paris’s Latin Quarter. How to bring it into the present without forgetting all its historical significance? Toledano + architects focused on letting light in and flooding everything. To achieve this, they demolished a wall and created an east-west corridor from which it is always possible to see the sun.

As for the materials, natural lime was chosen for the walls, selected for how it benefits air quality, and wood for much of the furniture for the warmth it brings to the rooms.

P+S house renovation | Julio Fernández Architect

This hexagonal-shaped flat in Murcia with a very large courtyard visually multiplied its square meters through a complete renovation. In it, some of its spaces were opened up and natural light was introduced through both facades, the main one and the one facing the courtyard. “The daytime area is completely unified at the entrance of the house, where the kitchen, dining room and living room come together in a fairly balanced and harmonious way”, explains architect Julio Fernández, responsible for the project.

Another distinctive feature is the visual effect created by the ceiling pits designed to accommodate the hanging beams. Furthermore, homogeneity is achieved by using the same material to cover the floor and walls. The use of solutions such as wood, with its textures, “conveys a sense of peace and tranquillity to all the rooms of the house, providing a place to take refuge”.
