Big Bang Kitchen: a new kitchen concept is born

World Design Capital Valencia 2022 has resulted in an explosion of new home design.  The Escenarios de un future cercano exhibition (Scenes from a near future) brought the reinvention of the kitchen with its Big Bang Kitchen.  This new model consists of a flexible modular system that isn’t attached to the walls in any way.  You’re bound to include it in your next residential project.  Let’s take a closer look.

The team at Cierto Estudio, the minds behind the project, say that the colour contrast is completely intentional.  “We wanted to homogenize the aesthetic, make it uniform, and do away with the idea of a closed room that has a singular purpose.

Its multifunctional nature is another key feature of the modular system, which adapts to different uses throughout the day and phases of our life.  It’s been designed to suit everyone, from true ‘foodies’ to those of us who use the kitchen to pop some takeout on a plate and little else.

Big Bang Kitchen can make the kitchen the heart of the home or turn it into a space that just has the basics, all without sacrificing added functionality.  This is made possible thanks to three elements manufactured by the Spanish association for kitchen fittings, AMC: a big table that acts as a catalyst for activity, a few fixed totems for storage and appliances which depend on the fitout, and a few low, mobile, and multifunctional pieces.  The amoeba-shaped table is made up of smaller pieces that can be used together or ‘explode’ apart (hence the name of the project), allowing users to create multi-purpose combinations.

The concept makes it easy to design the kitchen of your dreams without restrictive fixed elements.  The options open up a world of possibilities that go far beyond cooking, making it possible to create a study area, a living space, or different layouts depending on the social gathering.

The materials used in the space, timber and combinations of other materials like stainless steel, aren’t necessarily what you would typically associate with kitchens, but they don’t forgo anything in the way of durability and hygiene.  The use of Technical Matt is a highlight, thanks to its technical and decorative properties.  When used alongside the right appliances it allows you to change the type of room you’re in at any time.
